Seeking: MyBlogLog uber-user for long-term relationship

Things are taking off.  I say that without an ounce of hubris -- MyBlogLog was already going in the right direction and now with Yahoo! at our back, everything is accelerating.  It's heady stuff :)

We're hiring our first community manager to become a core member of team and a key public face of the service.  This person will own customer service, fixing problems where possible and routing more complicated issues to the development team.  Based on customer emails, the community manager will develop a comprehensive faq, oversee a community-based help system (either a wiki or a bulletin board, you will help us decide) and advise the team on ways to improve MyBlogLog.  Lastly, the community manager be an active and vocal participant in the world inside and outside of MyBlogLog.com, spurring conversations, mediating disputes and just generally building kharma by making the world a better place.

There aren't a lot of formal requirements for this position.  It would be best if you are already in the Bay Area because we want to get this party started.  Previous community management isn't a requirement, but it would damn well move you to the top of the queue.  You just need to be passionate about connecting people and have a strong grasp of the English language.

Thinking about it, I'm going to take a page out of Union Square Venture's playbook -- if you're our community manager, send me a link to your blog.  This tact netted them the awesome Andrew Parker and I'd be psyched if we had similar results.

I think, this shows mybloglog is moving towards right direction as well as. All the best mbl! Keep up the good work!

Too kind Eric. :)

Two comments:

1) You guys deserve the best, and I hope you find some stellar applicants.

2) When USV did this, applicants were required to post their app in the public comments. So, all applicants could see all other applicants' comments and web presence. It was a very controversial policy, but I think it worked out really well in the end. Check out the comments (and ignore the spam, I'm working on it): http://www.unionsquareventures.com/2006/07/looking_for_the.html

There are some obvious "leaders" who have stood out from the beginning. However, many of them probably have real "jobs". Is this a full-time position and/or what are you expecting from this person?

Alan -- This is a full-time, on site position. As for what we expect, I was hoping the post was fairly explicit -- please let me know what things I didn't cover and I'll update the post ASAP.

Salary? Benefits? Etc.

Dang, I live in Canada and can't move out there, but this really does sound like a dream job.

Any chance for a Canadian to do this ?

I'm in Michigan, I have no formal experience with Managing a Community, but I'm in a lot of Yahoo Groups already.. I'm always online.. Any chance for a Michiganian to get the top job?

Should it not be

We want to hire -------

Eric, I just want to congratulate you (and your team) for your wonderful work and your real success. I started to use your famous avatars widget on my previous blog at the very beginning of MyBloLog. Like many people I saw it grow up, and become more and more successful. You have to know that in France we have a lot of respect for your (fast)success and your deal with Yahoo...So, as we say in France : "Long life to MyBlogLog". The only thing I've noticed since few weeks, and maybe it is the darkside of your succes, is that I see more and more "Fake profiles", with spams and only commercials willings. I wouldn't want you to have the same problem than Orkut (the great spanish community) which is become a nonsense. I hope you will pay attention about this new problem and maybe "moderate" this kind of profiles. Sorry if my English is not perfect. See you.

Throw my name in the hat. I'm working a job I love, I'm a writer through and through. Come by and visit and tell me what my chances are - before I start packing for San Fran ;).

Eric, if you are looking at the future for a french community manager, i'm here ;)

I would be a *perfect fit* for the position, but I am not interested in moving to the Bay Area. I tell you what, if you move to the Research Triangle Park area we'll beat Google together at their own game!

I'd love to help, but I need to get all the info, like salary, for instance.

If it is a full time position on the site, I should know what I get in return.

How about in Japan? It sounds challenging for me as I am searching always for new stuff to do.
