Say goodbye to the animated avatars, y'all
No need to spend a lot of text on this one. The animated gifs bug enough people that we're getting rid of them. Next Friday we're going to process all of the images and cut them down to a single, static frame. If you have an animated avatar or community image, you have one week to update it or face the wheel of chance.

Your no fun. Sometimes they come up with an interesting one...

Aww, no more bouncing boob avatars? =[
By the way, when I made my avatar, I saw that the standard size was 25x25 pixels, so I made it at that size so it would be as sharp as possible. But I noticed that after I uploaded it, it was still a bit blurry, as if it had been scaled -- or had gone through a GIF to JPEG to GIF translation or something.
PNG is where it's at anyway. =P

It's very good idea!

Thank you Jesus! ...er, Eric!
While you are at it, please, please, set some image size restrictions! There is no reason for people to have 35KB Avatars that are 48x48. There should be a 10k max file size and a 0 tolerance policy.
I've had situations where loading the 9 MBL avatars on my page add up to over 200kb (none were animated). That is more than everything else on my page combined.
Thanks,
John

Thanks for the heads up. We're looking into it.

Oh, I see… The standard size is 48x48, not 25x25. How did I screw *that* up?

Classic line Eric! Please keep up the good work y'all are doing.

Thank you! Thank you! While they are ok to look at, sometimes my wife thinks I must be looking for porn or something with all the jiggling, wiggling stuff going on in a lot of the community pages.

This is my first visit to your site, but I had to comment on your recent decision to get rid of animated avatars. Thanks so much for deciding against those annoying things. :)

I'm very glad to hear it. Some
of those blinking avatars were
incredibly annoying.

The animated graphic you see is not the userpic image but the screenshot. If you look to right, you'll see that the userpic is not animated.

I've been kinda bummed about losing the avatar, but I came up with a replacement for creating animated avatars. It's not as cool, but it's something.
